Bathing Rules: Special importance of daily routine has been given in Ayurveda and bathing is an essential part of this daily routine. Often people associate bathing only with the external cleanliness of the body, but according to Ayurveda, it is a spiritual and healthy activity that provides peace to both the mind and body.
Bathing done properly not only refreshes but also helps in balancing the three fundamental doshas of the body – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. The physical nature of every person is different, hence the same type of water cannot be suitable for everyone.
When to bathe in lukewarm water
If your physical nature is Vata dominant then you would often feel dryness in the skin and your hands and feet would remain cold. According to Ayurveda, people with Vata Dosha should always take bath with lukewarm water. Cold water can increase Vata which can lead to feeling of stiffness in the body. Apart from this, oil massage is very beneficial for those with Vata Dosha. Massaging the body with any Ayurvedic oil after bathing deeply nourishes the skin and reduces dryness caused by Vata.
When to bathe with hot water
People with predominance of Kapha dosha often face problems like heaviness in the body, lethargy and frequent colds. For such people, bathing with hot water is considered best because hot water helps in reducing the accumulated phlegm in the body. Those with Kapha tendencies should completely avoid cold water as it can aggravate the dosha and cause lethargy. Besides, the time of bathing is also important, they should take bath early in the morning and should avoid bathing after noon.

Importance of common water
People whose nature is Pitta feel hot, sweat more and complain of acne on the face or burning sensation in the stomach. For such persons, normal temperature water or slightly cooled water is most suitable. Normal water helps in pacifying pitta and balancing the increased body temperature. However, people with Pitta dosha should avoid using too much cold water as it can disturb the natural balance of the body.
Ayurveda teaches us that we should change our habits only after understanding the nature of our body. Bathing with water of the right temperature not only reduces diseases but also makes a person feel energetic and healthy throughout the day.
