Verdict in Mainather case after 15 years: Life imprisonment to 16 accused of attack on IPS Ashok Singh

Lucknow, exposed. A big decision has come after almost 15 years in the famous Manather incident of Moradabad. The court has sentenced 16 convicts to life imprisonment in the case of fatal attack on IPS officer Ashok Kumar Singh. The ADJ (Additional District Judge) court had declared all the accused guilty four days ago. Ashok Kumar Singh is currently posted as Additional Director General of Police (ADG) in Lucknow.

How did the Mainather incident erupt?

The case is of July 2011, when Ashok Singh was posted as SSP in Moradabad. On July 5, the police had reached the village to arrest a molestation accused. The accused was also arrested, but some unruly elements spread the rumor that the police had insulted the religious book (Quran). After the rumor the atmosphere deteriorated rapidly and on July 6 the crowd took to the streets. The angry mob pelted stones and set arson at Mainather police station.

SSP trapped in crowd, attack continued for two hours

On receiving information about the uproar, SSP Ashok Singh and the then DM Rajshekhar reached the spot. Ashok Singh was trying to pacify the crowd with a loud hailer, when the crowd started pelting stones at him. Seeing the situation worsening, the DM left the spot. Meanwhile, due to misunderstanding, police vehicles also moved ahead and Ashok Singh got stuck alone in the crowd. The angry mob attacked him and beat him mercilessly, and even left him for dead. After about two hours, heavy police force reached the spot and they were taken out of the crowd. He was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, where treatment continued for a month. Later, after undergoing long treatment at AIIMS, his life could be saved.

There was a big uproar after the incident

After this incident, the atmosphere in entire Moradabad had become very sensitive. The then Mayawati government had to deploy administrative and police forces on a large scale to handle the situation. After the incident, 7 policemen deployed for the security of SSP were dismissed. Besides, the then DM Rajashekhar was also transferred. Now this decision, which came after 15 years, is being considered as a big action of justice.
