3 Reasons Why SRH Lost IPL 2026 Opening Match
The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) began their maiden title defense with a sensational victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as the IPL 2026 kicked off on Saturday evening in Bengaluru.
Rajat Patidar won the toss and elected to bowl first. SRH posted 201/9 on the back of interim captain Ishan Kishan’s 80.
That total seemed par, or even under-par, because of the batting beauty that is the pitch at this venue and the bite-sized ground. RCB did make it feel so as a 101 (45) second-wicket partnership between Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal all but ensured a victory for RCB, which was made even more comfortable by the following 53 (22) stand between Kohli and Patidar and 40* (19) between Kohli and Tim David.
RCB ended the night victorious by six wickets and with 26 balls to spare.
Let’s look at the failings of SRH in this fixture.
RCB vs SRH: 3 Reasons Why SRH Lost IPL 2026 Opening Match
Travi-Shek fails again
SRH reached the final of the IPL 2024 on the back of the staggering individual contributions from their openers, Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma.
However, the story flipped last season, and SRH’s over-reliability on these two was exposed: with Sharma and Head falling for low scores and being inconsistent, SRH’s batting was directionless.
It was reflected once again tonight in the RCB vs SRH clash: Abhishek scored 7 (8) and Head scored 11 (9). SRH lost three wickets in the powerplay, and even Kishan’s 80 wasn’t enough to take them to a winning total.
Where are the bowlers?
This SRH bowling attack might just be the weakest in the entire tournament. And that statement arguably would remain true even if Pat Cummins joins them, the skipper currently advised to not play, though he is with the team.
You know that bowling attack is disastrous when Nitish Kumar Reddy is opening the bowling. The likes of Unadkat and Harshal Patel are more suited to grippy pitches, the likes of which are almost non-existent in the IPL nowadays. David Payne, Ehsan Malinga, and Harsh Dubey are simply not skilled and experienced enough to intimidate the IPL batsmen.
The SRH bowlers looked bereft of ideas against the onslaught of Padikkal and the class of Kohli.
Phil Salt’s catching miracles
Where the difference in the batting and bowling departments of the two teams was stark, Phil Salt’s outstanding outfield work and Ishan Kishan’s sloppiness as a wicketkeeper were also a true reflection of the two teams’ morale.
Salt plucked two unbelievable catches near the boundary line to get rid of Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen, both of whom had gotten settled.
