Alternative to petrol and diesel ready? Government released big draft for hydrogen vehicles
Hydrogen Vehicles: Taking a big step towards clean and sustainable mobility in India, the government has released the draft of new rules related to safety and approval for vehicles running on hydrogen fuel. The objective of this initiative is to make hydrogen technology safe, standardized and ready for large-scale adoption.
The government has sought suggestions on this draft from all stakeholders, from industry to the common people, within 30 days, so that the future transport system can be further strengthened.
What are the key provisions?
According to the draft, type approval rules for hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles will be set under AIS 195:2023. At the same time, the fuel used in these will have to follow IS 16061:2021 standard. AIS 195A:2024 will be implemented for Construction Equipment Vehicles.
Guidelines for Fuel Cell Vehicles
Clear rules have also been set for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. For passenger and commercial vehicles (Category M and N), AIS 157:2020 will be applicable, while fuel quality will be determined as per ISO 14687. AIS 157A:2024 will remain applicable for construction equipment fuel cell vehicles.
Two-wheelers and small vehicles also included
Rules under AIS 206:2024 will be applicable for Category L i.e. two-wheelers and small vehicles. For fuel specification in these vehicles, appropriate standard will have to be adopted either IS 14687 or IS 16061:2021.
Why is this step important?
Hydrogen is a highly flammable gas, so strict regulations are required for its safety, storage and use. This draft will strengthen India in the direction of green energy and make the future transport system safe.
impact on industry
This framework will provide clear direction to auto companies, which will accelerate the development and launch of hydrogen vehicles. Besides this, the confidence of investors will also increase. Overall, this initiative is a big step towards laying a strong foundation for the future of hydrogen mobility in India.
