Lucknow. Recently, the Election Commission had conducted a special intensive review of voters in 9 states and 3 union territories. UP was also among these states. Names of 2.89 crore people of UP were deleted from the draft voter list that came after SIR. The Election Commission in UP is going to release the final draft voter list on April 10. Channel News18 has reported that the names of about 13.25 crore voters will be there in the final voter list. Before SIR, there were 15.44 crore voters in UP. Assembly elections are to be held in UP next year i.e. 2027. The impact of large number of names being deleted from SIR is likely to be visible in these elections.

After SIR, names of 12.55 crore voters were left in the draft voter list. At the same time, the Election Commission sent a notice to 3.26 crore voters of UP and held a hearing. According to the news, 86.69 lakh people of UP had applied to add their names to the voter list. At the same time, political parties filed complaints in 92 cases. The Election Commission has disposed of all these complaints. The settlement of remaining pending claims and objections is to be completed by March 27. The Election Commission is conducting the SIR with the powers granted under Article 326 of the Constitution. The Election Commission says that its intention is to exclude non-Indian citizens from the voter list.

The Election Commission first got the SIR done there before the Bihar Assembly elections. After this, SIR was conducted in UP, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Goa, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar and Lakshadweep. The Election Commission has announced that SIR will be conducted in the remaining states and union territories in April. The Election Commission intends to purify voter lists in all states before the end of this year. Politics is heated in West Bengal on SIR. Whereas, there was no uproar over this in other states.
