Mamata Banerjee targets Election Commission on IAS-IPS transfers!

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission and alleged that efforts were being made to give advantage to the BJP in the assembly elections through transfer of IAS and IPS officers in the state.

Addressing a public meeting in Raniganj in West Burdwan district, Mamata Banerjee said that the BJP has crossed all limits and now a ‘Lakshman Rekha’ should be decided. He alleged that the Election Commission, which he called ‘Vanishing Commission’, has transferred 50 to 100 officials from the state and sent them to Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Mamta Banerjee said that these officers were well aware of the local situation, but they were removed and sent out. According to him, this step has been taken to put pressure on the public and facilitate the entry of illegal money, narcotics and outside goons. He also alleged that an attempt was being made to instigate riots.

He also cornered BJP on the issue of removing names from the voter list and said that limits are being crossed in this matter also. He clearly said that there should be a limit in democracy and it should not be crossed.

Referring to the clashes that took place during the Ram Navami procession in Raghunathganj in Murshidabad district, Mamata Banerjee raised questions on the inaction of the administration. He said that at present the administration is under the control of the Election Commission, hence they should not be held responsible for these incidents.

He said, “All my officers have been transferred and now riots are being instigated in Raghunathganj. Shops were looted and property was damaged. When the time comes, we will not spare those instigating violence.” He also alleged that if BJP comes to power, bulldozer politics will start and people will be made homeless.

Referring to the bulldozer action in Behala, Mamata Banerjee apologized to the affected people and assured that their shops and properties would be rebuilt.

The Chief Minister also accused the BJP of adopting double standards. He said that on one hand BJP calls Trinamool Congress corrupt, while on the other hand it itself raises money from illegal coal mining.

During the rally, Mamata Banerjee also reiterated West Bengal’s tradition of communal harmony. He said that people of all religions come together to celebrate festivals like Ram Navami, Durga Puja, Eid and Christmas.

Along with this, he announced a rehabilitation package for the landslide affected areas of Raniganj. He said that those who want to move from these risky areas to safer places will be given Rs 10 lakh and two flats. The government will also bear the entire cost of transfer.

He said that so far 2,000 flats have been built and there are plans to build 4,000 more. Mamata Banerjee clarified that this entire process will be voluntary. He appealed to the people to consider this proposal keeping their safety in mind, because any major landslide could put the lives of thousands of people in danger.
