Hezbollah claimed responsibility for attacks on Israeli targets near Safed City
beirut:Lebanese armed group Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for attacks on Israeli military targets near the northern Israeli city of Safed on Sunday morning. Hezbollah said in a statement that it launched missile attacks on the Mahava Alon base and drone strikes on the Beriya base, which are located near Safed.
Hezbollah also claimed it fired three rocket salvos at Israeli troops and vehicles in the al-Malikiyah area in northern Israel. Additionally, Hezbollah fighters targeted an Israeli armored force in Deir Siryan, suggesting the conflict is spreading into southern Lebanon.
Earlier on Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) uncovered Hezbollah military structures and weapons hidden in civilian areas of southern Lebanon, posing a threat to the local population and international peacekeeping efforts. According to the IDF, soldiers found a Hezbollah weapons cache inside a school in the town of al-Khiyam, which is located near the Israeli-Lebanese border. These weapons included anti-tank rockets, mortar shells, grenades, launchers, light firearms and explosives.
The IDF also reported that the weapons were found with United Nations Human Rights Office (UNHCR) markings, further complicating the situation and raising fears that Hezbollah had misused humanitarian locations for military purposes. “Inside a school in the al-Khiyam area of southern Lebanon, IDF soldiers found anti-tank rockets, mortar shells, grenades, launchers, light firearms, explosives and other items with the markings of UNHCR,” the IDF said on X.
This incident was not the only one. The IDF also identified active Hezbollah military activities near a church in the same area. This military activity is hidden within civilian structures, part of Hezbollah’s efforts to hide it in densely populated areas, making it difficult for Israeli forces to neutralize it without endangering civilian lives.
