Political uproar in Kerala, BJP’s seal on Election Commission’s letter, created panic, election officials in action
News India Live, Digital Desk: Amidst the excitement of Kerala Assembly elections 2026, an incident has come to light which has created a stir in the political circles of the entire state. An official document issued by the Election Commission of India (ECI) has the seal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on it. After this incident, opposition parties have raised questions on the impartiality of the Election Commission and termed it an ‘insult to democracy’. At the same time, seeing the seriousness of the matter, the Election Commission has immediately punished the concerned officer. How did this big ‘blunder’ happen? According to the information received, this entire controversy started when copies of the 2019 guidelines related to disclosure of criminal history of candidates were distributed to political parties from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO). The surprising thing was that these official papers had the seal of the Kerala unit of BJP instead of the Election Commission. As soon as this document went viral on social media, all the opposition parties including Congress and CPI-M (CPI-M) started taking on the government and the Commission. Cleanliness and major action of the Election Commission Seeing the growing controversy, Chief Electoral Officer of Kerala Ratan U. Kelkar clarified the situation. He called it a ‘clerical error’. According to the Commission, some BJP officials had approached the Commission seeking clarification on the 2019 guidelines and they had submitted a photocopy of the document on their behalf, which bore the seal of their party. The employees posted in the Commission’s office unknowingly scanned the same photocopy and sent it to other parties also. For this gross negligence, the Commission has suspended the ‘Assistant Section Officer’ with immediate effect. Mamata Banerjee and Pinarayi Vijayan pointed out that the case has gained momentum not only in Kerala but also at the national level. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack, saying, “The cat is now out of the bag, which clearly shows who is running the commission from behind.” At the same time, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed his displeasure by writing a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner. He said that releasing documents bearing the stamp of the ruling party at the Center cannot be just a human error, it is a deep stain on the credibility of the Commission. Police keeping a close eye on social media Meanwhile, the cyber wing of Kerala Police has also become active. Police have issued a notice to social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) asking them to remove posts related to this controversial document. Police argue that such posts are tarnishing the image of the Election Commission and may disturb public order and communal harmony. So far, notices in this regard have been issued to more than 60 social media handles.
