Raymond Founder Vijaypat Singhania Cremated Industry Bids Emotional Farewell
Veteran Indian industrialist and Raymond Group founder Vijaypat Singhania was cremated in Mumbai on Sunday (March 29). 87-year-old Singhania died on Saturday (28 March) evening, after which there was a wave of mourning in the business and political world across the country. His death was confirmed by his son and Raymond Chairman and Managing Director Gautam Singhania. Many dignitaries along with family members attended the funeral and bid him farewell.
Vijaypat Singhania was counted among the prominent personalities of the Indian corporate world, who took the Raymond Group to new heights. Under his leadership in the 1980s, the company maintained its strong identity even in the competitive era. Even before economic liberalization, he took important steps towards making the company globally competitive.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed deep condolences on Singhania’s demise, saying, “The demise of Vijaypat Singhania, a very senior name of the Indian industry, is a very unfortunate event for us. He had a deep association with Thane and served the people sensitively. I pay him heartfelt tributes on behalf of the Government of Maharashtra and personally.”

Vijaypat Singhania was not only a successful industrialist but also a personality with a keen interest in adventure and aviation. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan. In November 2005, at the age of 67, he created a world record by reaching a height of about 69,000 feet through a hot air balloon. Earlier in 1988, he had also set the record of ‘Speed-over-Time Endurance’ by flying solo from London to New Delhi in a microlight aircraft.
In March 2007, he was appointed Chairman of the Governing Council of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, where he served until 2012. In the year 2000, he handed over the command of Raymond Group to his son Gautam Singhania, although even after this he remained active in public life. The demise of Vijaypat Singhania is being considered an irreparable loss for the Indian industry. His legacy and contributions will remain an inspiration for generations to come.
