CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh witnessed an extraordinary spectacle on Friday morning as the Indian Air Force’s premier Surya Kiran Aerobatic Team performed a high-precision air show over Sukhna Lake, drawing thousands of spectators and transforming the city’s skyline into a dramatic canvas of speed, colour and sound.
As the first formation of red Hawk jets roared into view, the crowd broke into applause.
Many raised their phones to record the moment, while others stood transfixed, absorbing the scale and precision of the display. The team’s nine aircraft flew in remarkably tight formation, at times separated by only a few metres, demonstrating exceptional coordination and discipline. The routine featured a sequence of complex manoeuvres—loops, barrel rolls, vertical splits and opposing passes—each executed with impeccable timing and symmetry.
One of the most striking moments came when the jets released streams of coloured smoke that streaked across the clear sky, forming vivid patterns and evoking both national pride and collective awe.
The synchronised cross-over manoeuvres, performed at high speed and relatively low altitude, drew audible gasps from the audience, underscoring the rigorous training and split-second precision required for such operations. Live commentary during the event offered insights into the formations and flight patterns, helping spectators appreciate the technical mastery underpinning the spectacle. The event was attended by Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, Haryana Governor Ashish Kumar Ghosh, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, along with senior civil and defence officials. Their presence underscored the significance of the occasion, which marked a rare civilian air display by the Air Force in the region.
The Surya Kiran team, widely recognised for its precision flying and disciplined execution, has represented India at numerous national and international forums. Their performance in Chandigarh reaffirmed their standing as one of the world’s accomplished aerobatic teams, seamlessly blending technical excellence with public engagement.
