16 year-old boy beaten to death in Varanasi over mobile phone theft accusation

A disturbing case of mob violence has emerged from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, where a 16-year-old boy was reportedly beaten to death with sticks over suspicions of stealing a mobile phone. The event took place in the Panditpur locality, under the Rohaniya police station. A minor named Sonu Ali was allegedly attacked by a group of individuals who accused him of stealing a mobile phone.

The victim, Sonu Ali, who is 16 years old, was at home on Saturday night when six people broke in and confronted him about a stolen mobile phone. His mother filed a complaint stating that the group, led by Ramesh, also known as Bablu Patel, pulled the teenager from his house to an underpass near a petrol pump in Panditpur. There, they violently attacked him with sticks, leaving him in critical condition. Following the assault, the accused was taken to Bhadwar police outpost, where they continued to press theft allegations. Police took Ali to the hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Acting on the complaint filed by the victim’s mother, Rohania Station House Officer (SHO) Raju Singh confirmed that an FIR has been filed against seven individuals, Ramesh alias Bablu Patel, Ravi Patel, Rohit, Govind, Gaurav Pal, Azad Ali, and one unidentified person. SHO Singh also confirmed that Ramesh has been arrested in connection with the case. Efforts are ongoing to capture the other accused. A detailed investigation into the matter is currently in progress, the officer added.
