BJD walks out of Rajya Sabha, expresses strong protest on Nishikant Dubey’s remarks

New Delhi, 30 March. Biju Janata Dal (BJD) members on Monday walked out of the Rajya Sabha in protest against Lok Sabha MP and BJP leader Nishikant Dubey’s alleged derogatory remarks against former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik. When the House meeting began, Chairman CP Radhakrishnan got the necessary documents and official papers tabled. After this, BJD leader Sasmit Patra raised this issue and lodged a strong protest.

He said that MP Nishikant Dubey has made “defamatory, false and fabricated statements” against Patnaik, which are completely unacceptable. Patra alleged, “Dubey has called Biju Patnaik a CIA agent. This shows the falling standards of the ruling party. This is extremely shameful.” He said that BJD strongly opposes this statement and is walking out of the House in protest against it. BJD members then walked out of the House. This issue has been gaining political prominence in recent times.

It is noteworthy that Sasmit Patra had also resigned from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology and Communications on Saturday, March 28, 2026. He took this step in protest against the remarks of committee chairman Nishikant Dubey. Biju Patnaik was the Chief Minister of Odisha twice (1961–63 and 1990–95) and Biju Janata Dal is named after him. He was a freedom fighter and famous aviator, known for daring missions.

He is said to have flown to Jakarta in 1947 to rescue the leaders of Indonesia’s independence movement. Apart from this, he also played a role in the operations related to the Battle of Stalingrad during World War II. BJD said such remarks against such a historical personality are not only derogatory but also beyond the facts. Biju Patnaik, who was the Chief Minister of Odisha twice (1961-63 and 1990-05), was a well-known freedom fighter. The party has demanded accountability from BJP on this issue.
