Allahabad HC’s clear stand on live-in relationships, big comment regarding inter-religious couples
Prayagraj: Allahabad High Court has given an important and clear message regarding inter-religious relations and personal freedom. The court has said that if two adults want to live together of their own free will, then it cannot be considered a crime. This comment has come at a time when controversies are often seen in the society regarding such relationships. This case is related to an inter-religious couple, who had approached the High Court regarding their safety.
The petitioners had appealed to the court to allow them to live a peaceful life and provide security to protect them from any kind of interference. Hearing this, the court said that such relationships cannot be declared illegal under Articles 14 (right to equality), 15 (protection against discrimination) and 21 (right to life and personal liberty) of the Constitution.
fundamental rights supreme
The court made it clear in its decision that the fundamental rights of any person are paramount. If the petitioners have not committed any crime, there is no reason to deny them security. The court specifically cited Article 21 and said that every person has the right to live life as per his choice. This also includes who he wants to live with.
Strict stance on forced religious conversion
The court also made it clear that if anyone puts pressure on the couple to convert against their will or uses any kind of coercion, it would be against the law. In such a situation, the petitioner can lodge a complaint with the police and will get legal protection. This direction of the court ensures that any kind of pressure or deception will not be tolerated.
While giving the verdict in this case, the single bench of Justice Vivek Kumar Singh said that when a person becomes an adult, he has full right to take the decisions of his life. The court also said that society or family cannot interfere in the personal choice of any person, especially when it is within the ambit of law.
