IndiGo Appoints Former British Airways Chief William Walsh as New CEO After Pieter Elbers’ Exit

IndiGo has announced the appointment of William Walsh as its new Chief Executive Officer, marking a significant leadership transition for India’s largest airline.

Walsh, widely known as Willie, brings decades of global aviation experience, having previously led British Airways and International Airlines Group (IAG). He currently serves as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Leadership Change After Elbers’ Exit

The appointment follows the resignation of Pieter Elbers, who stepped down 18 months before completing his term. His exit came amid operational challenges, including widespread flight cancellations that affected thousands of passengers.

Strong Endorsement from IndiGo Leadership

IndiGo Chairman Vikram Singh Mehta praised Walsh’s appointment, highlighting his extensive experience in managing large-scale airline operations and navigating complex global markets.

The airline expects Walsh’s leadership to drive continued growth and strengthen its position in one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation sectors.

Walsh Outlines Vision for IndiGo

Expressing enthusiasm about his new role, Walsh said he looks forward to building on IndiGo’s strong foundation and reputation. He emphasized fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and collaboration within the organization.

He also noted that IndiGo is well-positioned to adapt to the rapidly evolving aviation landscape and aims to create sustainable value for all stakeholders.

Challenges Ahead

IndiGo’s leadership transition comes at a critical time. The airline faced disruptions in December 2025 due to pilot shortages linked to flight duty time regulations, leading to mass cancellations and operational strain.

With Walsh at the helm, the focus is expected to shift toward operational stability, expansion, and strengthening customer experience.

A New Chapter for IndiGo

The appointment signals a new phase for IndiGo as it seeks to reinforce its dominance in domestic aviation while expanding its global footprint under seasoned leadership.
