The alarm rang at 6 a.m. and the job was gone; Oracle fired 30,000 in one fell swoop.

Oracle has initiated a massive workforce reduction, immediately dismissing 30,000 employees via email this morning, April 1st. Of these 30,000 employees, approximately 12,000 are from India. The positions of the employees who have been fired have been eliminated. While many are attributing the layoffs to artificial intelligence, a former employee claims that the layoffs were due to employees protesting against being made to work longer hours.

Oracle has cut approximately 30,000 jobs worldwide, representing approximately 18% of its workforce. This has affected employees in India, Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Oracle has not officially confirmed that 30,000 employees have been laid off, but laid-off employees have shared important information about the layoffs on social media.

Discussion on social media regarding layoffs

Oracle employees shared on Reddit that they received a termination email from the company around 6 a.m. One employee also said they had worked for the company for nearly 20 years but were suddenly fired.

According to several reports, these emails did not originate directly from HR, but were sent by Oracle leaders. In many cases, internal systems were blocked for those employees immediately after the emails were sent.

Are the layoffs due to AI?

According to reports, Oracle is currently investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and data center infrastructure development. It is believed that the company is trying to save money through these layoffs and invest this money in AI projects. The company is shifting its business away from an old software model and toward a modern cloud and AI-based model, which has rendered many existing roles redundant. This is believed to be the reason behind the layoffs.

Merugu Sridhar, a former Oracle employee, said that some time ago there were protests at the company over long working hours. That’s why the employees were laid off.
