The Indian Navy has achieved great success in further strengthening its maritime power. Shallow water anti-submarine warfare ship ‘Malvan’ built by Kochi-based Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) was formally handed over to the Navy on Tuesday (March 31). It is the second ship of the eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW SWC) series.

Name related to historical heritage

The name ‘Malwan’ is derived from Malvan, which is associated with the rich maritime heritage of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The name carries forward the legacy of the Indian Navy’s old minesweeper INS Malwan, which was in service until 2003.

This warship has been completely indigenously designed and built as per the requirements of the Indian Navy. It has been developed under international standards and uses more than 80% indigenous material.

equipped with state-of-the-art technology

This ship, about 80 meters long and weighing 1,100 tonnes, is equipped with modern technology. It is fitted with waterjet propulsion system along with torpedoes, multi-function anti-submarine rockets, advanced radar and sonar systems. The warship is capable of carrying out undersea surveillance, anti-submarine operations in coastal areas, low intensity maritime activities and other strategic missions.

The country’s defense production ecosystem has played an important role in the construction of ‘Malwan’, which also includes the contribution of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector. This project is being considered a big step towards strengthening India’s defense manufacturing capacity and reducing foreign dependence.
