Ground attack on Iran possible, mission ends on our terms: Hegseth!
At a press conference held in Washington DC to give an update on ‘Operation Epic Fury’, Pete Hegseth and Joint Chiefs Chairman General Dan Kane answered questions about upcoming plans, President Donald Trump’s motivation and military options.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said that talks regarding Iran are going on and are gaining momentum, but at the same time military options are also open. If needed, America can also launch a ground invasion. However, this may not be needed.
In response to a question, he said that America’s strategy is to be a little ‘unpredictable’, so that the enemy cannot guess what the next step will be.
“You can’t fight or win a war unless you tell your adversary what you’re willing to do and what you’re not willing to do—including deploying ground troops,” he said.
“Our adversary right now is thinking there are 15 different ways we can attack them with ground troops,” Hegseth added.
He said that if necessary, the United States “can use those options. Or maybe we don’t need to use them. Maybe we can negotiate. The main thing is to be unpredictable – certainly not to let anyone know what you are willing to do and what you are not.”
Gen. Dan Kaine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, also told reporters that the “range of military options” the US military can pursue is “quite broad.”
He said, “I wouldn’t want to limit the scope of the president’s decision-making, but there are a number of things—the most important of which is that Iran should take into account—that our troops are there and they act as a pressure point. So I believe that given the current situation, he should carefully consider this at the diplomatic level.”
While answering the question regarding Trump’s aggressive attitude towards NATO, Hegseth made it clear that ‘the mission will end on our terms only.’ In the words of the President, there is no doubt about it. As far as NATO is concerned, this decision will be left to the President. But let me just say that a lot has become clear.
He sarcastically said that the world has seen that when we make such a large-scale effort on behalf of the free world, what are our allies ready to do for America? America is not in the range of their missiles. They reach out to our colleagues and others. Yet, when we ask for additional help or just basic air travel permission, we are met with questions, obstructions or hesitations.
Then Hegseth finally explained the meaning of Trump’s truth post, saying that the President is indicating that if you have countries that are not ready to stand with you when needed, then your alliance has no special meaning.
