Six years on, Covid’s shadow lingers for affected families

While the world has largely moved on from Covid-19, for many families like the Bandgars in Bhigwan near Pune, the pandemic’s impact remains deeply embedded in everyday life.

Living with long-term consequences

Years after infection, the family continues to battle lingering health complications, financial strain, and emotional exhaustion. What was once a global crisis has now become a personal, ongoing struggle.

Vishal Bandgar, now in his early 30s, describes how life has changed dramatically. He balances work with caregiving responsibilities, tending to his bedridden father while supporting his exhausted mother.

Interrupted dreams, resilient spirit

During the peak of the pandemic, Vishal had to pause his studies for nearly 18 months as both he and his father battled Covid-19. The experience reshaped his priorities, forcing him into a role of responsibility at a young age.

Despite the setbacks, he recently cleared the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) Group C examination, securing a junior assistant post—an achievement reflecting perseverance amid adversity.

Financial and emotional toll

The family continues to face mounting medical expenses, with savings steadily depleting. Constant hospital visits and long-term care needs have made recovery not just a health challenge, but a financial one.

For families like the Bandgars, Covid-19 is not a past event but an ongoing reality—marked by chronic illness and the demands of caregiving.

A pandemic that hasn’t ended for all

While public dashboards and restrictions may have disappeared, the long-term effects of the virus continue to affect thousands of households across India.

Their stories highlight a less visible phase of the pandemic—one defined not by infection rates, but by prolonged recovery, resilience, and the silent burden carried by families.
