Will Priyadarshan save Hera Pheri 3? Writer Rohan Shankar hints at return if the OG director signs on
The long-awaited return of Raju, Shyam, and Baburao has hit yet another major roadblock. Screenwriter Rohan Shankar, known for his work on hits like Luka Chuppi and Mimi, has officially confirmed his exit from the third installment of the Hera Pheri franchise. His departure highlights the ongoing “legal mess” that continues to stall one of Bollywood’s most anticipated sequels.
Speaking to News18 , Shankar opened up about the frustrations surrounding the project. Despite a teaser featuring the original trio – Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, and Paresh Rawal – being filmed last year, the movie has struggled to move into active production.
“I was in talks, and it was supposed to happen, but it didn’t because of legal issues,” Shankar revealed.
The screenwriter explained that the current environment surrounding the film’s rights and production logistics is too “cluttered” for steady creative progress, leading to his decision to step away from the script.
However, Shankar left a glimmer of hope for fans of the original 2000 masterpiece. In a move that underscores the industry’s deep respect for the franchise’s roots, he hinted that his departure might not be permanent if a certain legendary director returns to the helm.
“Hopefully, if Hera Pheri 3 happens and if Priyadarshan sir is there, maybe I will be too,” he stated.
This condition has reignited speculation that the “Dream Team” could reunite. Priyadarshan, who directed the first Hera Pheri, is currently working with Akshay Kumar on the horror-comedy Bhooth Bangla. Many believe that if their current collaboration is a success, Priyadarshan might be the only one capable of navigating the “Hera Pheri” legalities and bringing the iconic characters back to life.
While the script for Hera Pheri 3 remains in limbo, the lead stars are keeping busy with other major projects. Akshay Kumar is gearing up for the release of Bhooth Bangla later this month, while fans continue to wait for a resolution to the off-screen drama that has become as complex as a Baburao scheme.
