Investigation Underway, Forensic Teams Deployed
Senior police officials, including the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), reached the spot soon after the incident and initiated an investigation. Forensic teams examined the area to collect evidence and understand the nature of the explosive used.
Preliminary inputs suggest the grenade may have been assembled using gunpowder. Central intelligence agencies have also been placed on alert in the wake of the attack, given its seriousness and possible wider implications.
Concerns Raised Over Law And Order
Punjab BJP chief Sunil Jakhar strongly reacted to the incident, calling it part of a disturbing pattern of attacks. He pointed to recent incidents, including grenade attacks on police stations and the vandalism of a statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar in Hoshiarpur, saying these events point to attempts to disturb communal harmony.
He also criticised the state government, claiming that it has failed to maintain law and order. According to him, such incidents are now spilling over into neighbouring Chandigarh, raising further concerns about safety in the region.
Possible Link To Extremist Groups Under Probe
Sources indicated that a possible Khalistani angle is being examined as part of the investigation. Reports suggest that certain groups have been targeting police establishments, BJP and RSS offices, and leaders of Hindu organisations in Punjab since 2024.
Officials also noted that multiple arrests have been made in recent months in connection with attempts to disrupt peace and destabilise the region, highlighting ongoing security challenges in the area.
