Donald Trump may announce leaving NATO! angry at not getting support

Washington: US President Donald Trump has once again raised questions on the relevance of the NATO alliance and has hinted at separation from it. Amidst the ongoing war with Iran, Trump, in many of his interviews, had sharply criticized the non-cooperation from NATO countries. According to CNN news, Trump is considering taking America out of this organization. But this step will not be easy for them.

Criticism from NATO allies
Trump also said in several interviews that he would consider America leaving NATO. He criticized NATO members, saying that their military support in the war had been too weak. Along with this, Trump has claimed that the Iran war can end in a few weeks.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized NATO since the war with Iran began more than a month ago and has said in two recent interviews that he would consider pulling the country out of the organization. Let us tell you that the NATO military alliance was created in 1949 to ensure lasting peace in Europe and North America.

Can Trump legally leave NATO?
There are differences of opinion between legal experts and the US Congress on Trump’s claim of leaving NATO. According to a law passed by the US Congress in 2023, the President cannot withdraw the US from NATO without two-thirds consent of the Senate or an act of Congress. Current Secretary of State Marco Rubio was also among the co-sponsors of this bill.

Republican Senator Thom Tillis has clarified that the President does not have the power to take this decision alone, although he can definitely make the alliance relations ‘poisonous’. On the other hand, a legal opinion from the Department of Justice (DOJ) in 2020 stated that the President has exclusive authority over treaties. In such a situation, this matter may become a part of court proceedings in future.

The main objective of NATO, established in 1949, was to maintain peace in Europe and North America. If the world’s largest military power (America) comes out of it, then this decades-old security shield can completely collapse.
