Bayern Munich have been linked with a potential summer move for Manchester City’s Phil Foden, yet fresh reports indicate the Bavarian club’s transfer priorities may lie in a different direction.
Foden’s Impressive City Career
A homegrown talent from Manchester City’s academy, the 25-year-old England international has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most exciting attackers. Since his senior debut in 2017, Foden has featured in more than 360 matches, contributing 110 goals. His ability to operate on the right wing or in central attacking positions makes him a versatile and creative force.
This season, despite not reaching his highest levels of productivity, Foden has still delivered a solid tally of 10 goals and five assists across all competitions. Speculation about his future has intensified, but Manchester City are actively working on a new long-term contract. Recent discussions have raised hopes that an agreement could be secured before the campaign concludes, keeping the player at the Etihad Stadium.
Bayern’s Admiration and Reported Interest
The interest from Bayern Munich is understandable. Manager Vincent Kompany, who shared a dressing room with Foden during his time at Manchester City, has long held the youngster in high regard. However, according to respected German journalist Christian Falk, there are no concrete negotiations underway for the Englishman this summer.
Foden’s current deal runs until 2027, and his estimated market value sits around £70-80 million. This figure appears to exceed Bayern’s allocated budget for an attacking midfielder, making a move unlikely in the current financial climate.
Squad Depth Reduces Need for Big Signing
Bayern already possess strong options in the areas where Foden excels. Michael Olise is the established first-choice on the right flank, while young German prospect Lennart Karl an 18-year-old attacking midfielder/winger has emerged as a highly promising talent with a bright future at the club. In more central roles, experienced players like Serge Gnabry and Jamal Musiala are expected to continue providing support behind star striker Harry Kane.
With such depth already in place, there is little urgency for Bayern to invest heavily in another attacking midfielder.
Strategic Focus on Left Wing Backup
Instead, the club is prioritising a more modest reinforcement on the left wing to act as backup to Luis Díaz. The preference is for a low-profile signing ideally a young, affordable player who is comfortable accepting a secondary squad role rather than demanding regular starts.
