Celebrity chef Bobby Flay is highly skilled at crafting easy-to-make, healthy recipes for the home cook. Not only is Flay a highly skilled—and famously hard to beat—chef, but he can be pretty relatable with his content. Over on Instagram recently, Flay took fans through his typical morning routine and he shared that he’s been digging a simple, three-ingredient breakfast.
First thing in the morning, at 5:30 sharp, Flay turns on CNBC. (Flay’s daughter, Sophie, works as an anchor on ABC and poked fun at his choice in the comments.) He makes himself some coffee, preferably a macchiato or cortado, which he said is basically double espresso with a splash of milk. In the clip, Flay adds some pistachio milk to his espresso, which sounds pretty tasty to us.
As for breakfast, Flay said he recently discovered Siggi’s coconut yogurt. Siggi’s plant-based yogurt is inspired by Icelandic skyr. “It’s got so much flavor to it,” Flay says. Flay opts for the classic toasted coconut flavor, but Siggi’s offers several other plant-based varieties. Though it varies depending on the flavor, this particular yogurt offers 10 grams of protein per 5.3-ounce container, which is a nice, filling way to start the morning. Plus, it contains live active cultures to support gut health.
But he doesn’t enjoy the yogurt plain. “I’m cookin’ folks,” he jokes as he sprinkles a generous amount of cinnamon directly into the yogurt cup. He tops the whole thing off with a couple of blackberries. Besides the infusion of flavor, cinnamon has several health benefits, including that it may help lower blood sugar and high cholesterol. Adding in those blackberries also offers some fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants. With three easy ingredients, Flay is ready for the morning.
After his breakfast (and feeding the cats), Flay goes on an hour-long run on the streets of New York City. After the run, he doesn’t stop there—he goes to his Pilates class at Equinox. From there, it’s off to the studio to start his work day. He has a tub of his homemade chicken broth in hand, ready for lunch. However, before he can start thinking about lunch, Flay has a second breakfast. He has more coconut yogurt, but, this time, tops it with some pistachios and more berries, plus a little honey. Pistachios add some crunch to the bowl, plus a little protein and potassium, too.
Since he only has a little bit of time between the double workout and filming, his portable yogurt-berry breakfast is a great way to start the day quickly and easily. Some yogurt for breakfast can even be a nice way to add a gut-healthy meal to your day, since yogurt that contains live active cultures supports a healthy microbiome. Since Flay exercises so much in the morning, he’ll need something for breakfast, and this light yogurt cup is a perfect low-lift option. The next time you’re in a breakfast rut, give this easy meal a try—or opt for another three-ingredient recipe.
