New Delhi: It is often advised to drink more water to stay healthy, but do you know that drinking more water than required can also be harmful for the body? While adequate water keeps the body hydrated and helps in flushing out toxins, excess of it can lead to many health problems.
According to experts, when we drink more water than required, the electrolyte balance of the body can get disturbed, especially the sodium level decreases. This condition is called hyponatremia in medical language, which can pose serious health risks.
The need for water is different for every person
Experts say that the right amount of water depends on the age, weight and health of the person. Generally it is advised to drink 8 glasses of water, but it is not equally necessary for everyone.
For some people this quantity may be more, while for others it may be less. According to research, men need about 3.7 liters of water and women need 2.7 liters of water, which also includes food and other beverages.
Body signs of drinking too much water

Due to overhydration, the sodium level in the body can fall, causing headache, dizziness and feeling of heaviness in the head. Many times people ignore it considering it to be normal fatigue.

When the amount of water in the body increases, stomach discomfort starts. This may cause a feeling of nausea or vomiting, which is a sign that the body is losing balance.

Drinking excessive water can cause electrolyte imbalance, which can cause swelling in hands, feet or lips. This shows that the body is not able to control excess water properly.

If you are urinating more often than usual, it may be a sign of drinking too much water. Generally, it is normal to urinate 6 to 8 times a day, but if this number becomes too high and the urine appears completely clear, then one should be cautious.
