New Zealand completes the biggest run chase, Amelia Carey creates history
Wellington, 02 April 2026: In the second ODI played in Wellington, New Zealand women’s cricket team defeated South Africa by two wickets. Batting first, South Africa scored 346 runs. Chasing the target, New Zealand captain Amelia Carey played a brilliant inning of 179 runs. Apart from the captain, Isabella Charlie Gage played important innings of 68 runs. This is the most successful run chase in women’s ODI cricket, which was made by India last year.
New Zealand needed 17 runs in 12 balls to win. In the 19th over, Ayabanga Khaka took one wicket and gave only 6 runs. South Africa got hope from Khaka’s brilliant over. Nadine de Klerk bowled the last over, in which Amelia Carey leveled the score by hitting a single on the first two balls and a single on the third ball. By hitting a choggo on the fourth ball, Carey gave a historic victory to the New Zealand women’s team.
Most chases in women’s ODI
The successful chase of 347 runs has now become the highest successful run chase in women’s ODI history. Earlier, this record was in the name of the Indian team, which had achieved the target of 339 runs in October last year. Team India won this match against Australia.
Amelia Carey scored 179 runs
The star team of this historic chase was Amelia Kerr, who scored an unbeaten 179 runs in 139 balls. The captain had hit 23 fours and one six during this innings. Isabella Charlie Gage also scored an important half-century, scoring 68 runs in 48 balls with 11 fours. This is the second time that Carey has scored more than 150 runs in ODI cricket. She is the highest run scorer among women cricketers in this format, she scored 232 runs in 2018.
The three-match ODI series between South Africa vs New Zealand is now level at 1-1. South Africa won the first match by 2 wickets. The series-deciding ODI will be played on Saturday, April 4.
