Big relief for WhatsApp users, SIM Binding rule postponed, know when the use of your app will change.
SIM Binding Rule: if you WhatsApp, Telegram Or use other messaging apps, then there is big news for you. To stop cyber fraud and online fraud, the government had decided to implement SIM binding rule, but now its deadline has been extended.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has now extended the last date for implementation of this rule for OTT platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, Snapchat, Signal and Arattai to December 31, 2026. That means at present users do not need to worry about any changes.
What are SIM Binding rules?
According to this rule brought by the government, only the person who has an active SIM card of that number will be able to use messaging apps. In addition, to increase the security of the web and desktop versions, the rule of automatic log-out every 6 hours will also be implemented. However, due to technical problems, companies have not yet been able to fully implement this system. Now under the new deadline, this rule will be applicable only after December 31, 2026.
Why was this strict step necessary?
The government has taken this step to stop the rapidly increasing cases like cyber fraud, online scams and ‘digital arrest’ in the country. Often criminals cheat people by using foreign numbers or devices without SIM. After SIM Binding is implemented, every account will be linked to an active Indian SIM, which will make it difficult to create fake and anonymous accounts.
What will be the impact on web and desktop users?
This rule is not limited to mobile users only. If you use WhatsApp or other apps on a laptop or computer, you will still face changes:
- Desktop version will automatically log out every 6 hours
- QR code has to be scanned to login again
- Scanning has to be done from the same phone in which active SIM is present.

The real reason for extending the deadline
The government had initially targeted to implement this rule by February 2026, but tech companies sought time citing technical challenges. According to reports, it is easy to implement in Android devices, but making changes in Apple’s iOS system is complicated due to security reasons. For this reason, the government has decided to implement it in a phased manner, so that the users do not face any kind of problem.
What is the update for the users at present?
For now, till December 31, 2026, users can use WhatsApp and other apps as before. There is no need to panic about any new rules.
