Democratic MPs strongly criticized Trump’s Iran conflict, mentioned the dire consequences of the war

Washington: Senior Democratic lawmakers on the US Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday strongly criticized President Donald Trump’s ongoing conflict with Iran. He expressed concern over the humanitarian, economic and geopolitical consequences of the conflict led by Trump and warned that it would have even more serious implications in the future.

“More than a month has passed since President Trump unilaterally initiated war against Iran, and he is still far from achieving his vague goals,” said committee ranking members Gregory Meeks, Adam Smith and Jim Hymes in a joint statement.

The lawmakers argued that the Trump administration has failed to achieve any significant strategic results in the conflict with Iran. He said, “There has been no fundamental change in the Iranian regime related to curbing Iran’s nuclear program, producing ballistic missiles or supporting terrorist proxies. Moreover, Trump has achieved no success in providing relief to the aggrieved people of Iran.”

The lawmakers also warned that “none of these goals have been achieved and President Trump’s war is having deep and devastating impacts on the region and the world.”

Highlighting the humanitarian and material loss, the statement said, “This conflict has resulted in the deaths of 13 US troops, hundreds of others injured, and billions of dollars worth of military equipment destroyed or damaged. Thousands of Iranian civilians have been killed, including more than 150 Iranian school girls. And countless others have been radicalized against the US as Trump has unleashed a wave of destruction.”

Democratic lawmakers also said that it has had a serious impact on the global economic situation. He said, “The US and global economies are facing severe shortages in the supply of essential commodities, such as fertilizer, helium and oil. The conflict has created a state of war in the Middle East and strained relations with some of America’s key allies.”

“After Trump has humiliated, belittled and pressured his allies and partners since returning to office, our oldest and most loyal partners are no longer willing to support his war,” the lawmakers said.

He stressed the need for a new approach, saying, “We look forward to hearing from the President about where we are going next, how this war will be ended, and how the broader instability he has created with his war will be resolved.”

The lawmakers appealed for immediate diplomatic action, saying, “We urge the President to immediately begin ceasefire negotiations with Iran and work toward a diplomatic solution. This is the only possible way he can end his destructive war before its consequences bring even more devastation and we are drawn into another never-ending war.”
