Is the definition of Indian weddings changing? The growing influence of extramarital dating apps
New face of weddings in India
New Delhi: Wedding ceremonies are still a big celebration in India, but figures from an extramarital dating app are challenging this tradition. This platform called Gleeden has recently crossed the figure of more than 40 lakh users, in which a significant increase has been seen in the number of women.
Unprecedented increase in the number of women
According to the statistics of this app, men constitute 65% of the total users, while women constitute 35%. But women’s sign-ups have increased by 148% in the last two years. This shows that women are now actively making decisions for their own happiness and emotional needs. Cities like Bengaluru and Hyderabad are at the forefront of this change.
Due to extra-marital affairs
According to the 2025 IPSOS survey, the cause of affairs is not always negative. Many times this is due to “lack of time”. Between job commitments and family responsibilities, 33% people are unable to find time for themselves. Apart from this, lack of emotional connection is also an important reason. Many people look for a little relief and adventure by using the app on their lunch break or at night.
breaking gender stereotypes
Earlier it was believed that only men have outside relationships, but now this perception is changing. In the survey, 43% men and 42% women admitted to emotional or physical relationships. This shows that women are also now looking for satisfaction outside a stable marriage. Nearly half also mentioned their fantasies, which raise questions about the concept of traditional marriage.
Where and when is there most activity?
This trend is most visible in big cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi and Mumbai, but tier-2 cities like Lucknow and Surat are also growing rapidly. Most of the people use the app from 12 noon to 3 am and from 10 pm to midnight.
Men generally prefer young women of 25-30 years of age, while women are attracted to established professionals of 30-40 years of age such as doctors or chartered accountants. This shows that financial stability is still important.
Social media and digital transformation
More than 60% of people consider the convenience of online flirting as a reason for increasing affairs. These apps provide a safe and secure space for people who feel emotionally or physically dissatisfied. As social stigma diminishes and the user base crosses 40 lakh, traditional promises are now becoming flexible for many Indians.
