Hanuman Janmotsav: Delhi Police on ‘high alert’, large number of security personnel deployed for procession in Uttam Nagar, Jahangirpuri
Delhi. Delhi Police is on ‘high alert’ in view of the procession taken out by several Hindu organizations in Uttam Nagar and Jahangirpuri on Thursday on the occasion of Hanuman Janmotsav. A senior police officer said that a large number of security personnel have been deployed in both the areas to maintain law and order.
Security has been tightened in Uttam Nagar in the backdrop of the murder of a 26-year-old youth of the area following a fight between a family and its neighbors in JJ Colony during Holi.
The incident had led to tension in the area, with the angry mob vandalizing vehicles and setting some on fire resulting in the deployment of a large number of police personnel for a week. The violence broke out when water from a balloon thrown by a girl from the family of a man named Tarun fell on a woman from a neighboring family.
So far 16 people, including two minors, have been caught or arrested in this case. An official said that Delhi Police conducted a ‘flag march’ in the North-West district ahead of Hanuman Janmotsav and also patrolled on motorcycles.
Officials said a peace committee meeting was also held in Jahangirpuri to ensure communal harmony ahead of the festival as several people, including policemen, were injured in incidents of stone pelting and arson in the violence that broke out during the Hanuman Janmotsav procession in the area in 2022. “Surveillance has been increased through CCTV cameras, drones and local intelligence,” police said.
Barricades have been put up at important places and ‘flag marches’ are being conducted to build confidence among the local people.” Under this campaign conducted in key areas of the district, heavy presence of officers has been ensured on major roads and sensitive areas. Its objective was to strengthen security arrangements and increase public confidence ahead of the festival.
