Central government gave instructions to stop TRPs of TV news for 4 weeks
New Delhi, 2 April. The Central Government has directed to stop Television Rating Points (TRPs) of TV news for four weeks. This step has been taken with the aim of curbing speculation and sensationalist news during crisis situations. Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan gave this information in written reply to questions asked by Eatala Rajendra in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Objective: To curb speculation and sensational news in crisis situations.
It is noteworthy that during Operation Sindoor, some TV news channels were found airing unnecessary sensationalism and speculative content. In fact, this kind of behavior has been observed by TV channels in times of conflict or crisis. It also has the potential to spread panic among the public, especially with friends and family members living in affected areas.
Therefore, as a precautionary measure, the government has directed TV news channels to stop reporting TRP for a period of four weeks. These directions have been widely accepted by all stakeholders and no objection has been received against the same so far.
