The rule of giving 60% free seats to airlines has been postponed for the time being.

The government has currently postponed the proposal to provide 60 percent seats to airlines without extra charges. This decision has been taken in view of the objections of the aviation industry and the possible impact on the fare structure. According to sources, airlines companies had expressed concern over this proposal, after which the government has decided to comprehensively review its effects before implementing this rule. According to PTI news, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has been directed to keep the provision related to 60 percent free seats on hold for now, while other rules related to passenger convenience should be kept in force.

Provisions related to passenger convenience will remain in force
According to the news, the government believes that this proposal may have an impact on the fare structure of airlines and market competition, because the fare determination of the aviation sector in India is already liberalized. Meanwhile, other provisions related to the convenience of passengers will remain in force, but the rule related to free seats will remain suspended for the time being. The government will take a final decision on this proposal after consulting all parties.

What was the current system?
Before this order, only 20 percent seats in airlines could be booked for free, while additional charges had to be paid for all the remaining seats. Seat selection charges ranged from ₹200 to ₹2,100, depending on the seat row and availability of leg room. Operating costs for airlines have also increased due to the war in Iran, leading to an increase in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices.
These provisions also for passengers
Under the new rule, there is also a provision that passengers traveling on the same PNR will be seated together. If possible, they will be given adjacent seats. This will prevent families from getting separated, especially those traveling with children or the elderly. Airlines are also expected to be allowed to carry sporting goods and musical instruments in a clear and passenger-friendly manner, while adhering to safety regulations.
