Malda Dispute Case: Taking major action in the disturbance case during the voter list dispute in Malda district of West Bengal, the police have arrested the main accused Mofakkarul Islam. According to the police, he was the main conspirator behind the entire conspiracy to surround the seven judicial officers. He was caught from Bagdogra Airport when he was trying to escape.

Who is Mofakkarul Islam?

Mofakkarul Islam is said to be associated with Asaduddin Owaisi’s party AIMIM. He is a resident of Porsa Hatkhola, Itahar in North Dinajpur district and has been a lawyer by profession. He practiced in the Raiganj District Court and later also practiced in the Calcutta High Court.

He has a chamber in Kolkata and lives there with his family. In politics, he joined AIMIM before the 2021 assembly elections and also contested from Itahar seat, but he got only 831 votes.

Many other arrests were also made

Police have also arrested at least 17 other people including an election candidate in the Malda Dispute case. These include Indian Secular Front (ISF) candidate Maulana Shahjahan Ali. All the accused were produced in the court, from where they have been sent to 10 days police custody.

What is Malda Dispute case?

The incident took place at Kaliachak II block office of Mothabadi assembly constituency in Malda district on Wednesday. During the work related to voter list, the protesters surrounded seven judicial officers in the BDO office for about seven and a half hours. Three women officers were also included in these.

After his arrest, Maulana Shahjahan Ali has rejected the allegations against him. He says that he is being implicated because of his political identity. He claimed that he was not present at the spot at the time of the incident and was arrested while returning from a religious function. Police say that there is enough evidence against the accused and everyone is being interrogated. Also, there is a possibility of more arrests in the case.
