Russia proposes to supply more oil and natural gas to India

Russia has proposed to increase the supply of more oil and natural gas to India. Meanwhile, Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S. Met Jaishankar. During this, ways to take forward cooperation in important sectors like energy and fertilizers were discussed. Narendra Modi said on social media that he and Manturov discussed mutually beneficial cooperation in the areas of trade, fertiliser, connectivity and people-to-people relations. Modi praised the sustained efforts of both countries to implement the decisions of the India-Russia summit held during President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi last December.

After the meeting with Manturov, Jaishankar said both sides focused on bilateral cooperation in areas such as trade, industry, energy, fertiliser, connectivity and mobility. He also said that new possibilities were explored in the fields of technology, innovation and critical minerals. Manturov and Jaishankar also discussed regional and global issues, including the conflict in West Asia.

The Russian Embassy said in a statement that Manturov confirmed that Russian companies have the ability to continuously increase the supply of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the Indian market. Manturov said that Russia has increased the supply of essential mineral fertilizers to India by 40 percent by the end of 2025 and is ready to meet India’s needs further. A joint project for carbamide production is also being developed by both the countries.

India is currently facing disruptions in energy and fertilizer supplies due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to the conflict initiated by Israel and military attacks on Iran by the US. Russia has once again emerged as India’s major energy supplier following the recent relaxation of sanctions by the US to allow India to continue purchasing Russian energy.

Manturov, co-chairman of the Russia-India Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation, also met National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

According to the Russian statement, expanding mutually beneficial trade, investment and industrial cooperation was a key part of Manturov’s agenda. “Concrete measures were discussed to create a conducive environment for expanding bilateral trade under the current circumstances,” the statement said. Russia and India are further strengthening their partnership in the field of nuclear energy and see great opportunities to further deepen relations with India in this field. The reactor construction work for the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project is progressing as per schedule.
