Shock to Rajpal Yadav from High Court: Refusal to give more time to repay Rs 6 crore
Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has received a big blow from Delhi High Court. His plea seeking additional time to repay the outstanding amount in the check bounce case was strictly rejected by the court. The court said in clear words, “No means no. I am reserving the order. I will not give any more time.”
Justice Swarn Kanta Sharma in Delhi High Court expressed strong displeasure over the repeatedly changing stand of the actor and his lawyers during the hearing. The court said, “Never assume that the judge is weak if the judge is treating you well.”
The court showed strictness
During the hearing, the court raised questions on the contradictory arguments and said, “You are saying that you are ready to pay, but your lawyer is saying that you have gone to jail, hence will not pay. If you want to pay, then why am I hearing this case? Pay.” Rajpal Yadav had asked the court for 30 days time to repay Rs 6 crore, which was rejected by the court.
This case was registered on the complaint of Murali Projects Private Limited, alleging check bounce under Section 138 (Negotiable Instruments Act).
In May 2024, the sessions court had convicted Rajpal Yadav and sentenced him to 6 months imprisonment. Later the High Court had postponed his sentence on the condition that he would pay the outstanding amount and the case would be resolved. After this the case was sent to Delhi High Court Mediation Centre.
Court strict on repeated breach of promise:
The court found that despite giving assurances several times, Rajpal Yadav failed to deposit the stipulated amount. He had promised to give Rs 2.5 crore in installments, but did not follow through.
Due to non-compliance in February 2026, the court had directed him to surrender. After this, he surrendered on 5 February. However, he got interim relief after depositing Rs 1.5 crore.
Advocate Avneet Singh Sikka, appearing for the complainant, argued that completing the sentence does not end the financial liability. He told that Rajpal Yadav himself has admitted that payment of about Rs 10 crore is still pending. According to him, around Rs 2 crore has been paid before the trial court, but around Rs 7.75 crore is still outstanding.
Efforts for compromise also failed:
The court also explored the possibility of a lump sum settlement and indicated that the dispute could end if Rs 6 crore was paid soon. The complainant was also ready to consider it. Rajpal Yadav, who appeared through video conferencing, expressed his willingness to pay and citing financial loss, said that he had sold five flats.
Despite this, when he asked for 30 days time, the court flatly refused. At present, no settlement has been reached in the case and the court has reserved its decision.
