OTT offer of Rs 700 crore for Ramayana film rejected
Big OTT offer for Ramayana film
Mumbai: New information is continuously coming out about Bollywood’s much awaited and mega budget film ‘Ramayana’. After the launch of the teaser of the film, the curiosity among the audience has increased further. Producer Namit Malhotra has taken an important decision for the digital rights of the film. According to sources, he had received an offer of Rs 700 crore for the OTT rights of Ramayana (both parts).
Reason for rejecting OTT offer of Rs 700 crore
This is considered to be the biggest proposal ever for Indian cinema. However, Namit immediately rejected it. He believes that the film should be valued more given its grandeur and its long-term legacy. They are now expecting a deal worth Rs 1000 crore.
The total budget of the film is around Rs 4000 crore. Namit aims to generate Rs 1000 crore from OTT, so that it can be easy to recover the remaining Rs 3000 crore from theatrical release, global box office and other sources.
A source said, ‘Namit got an offer of Rs 700 crore for both the films, which is the biggest ever for any Indian film. But he rejected it. Considering the budget of Rs 4000 crore, he believes that Ramayana is a legacy film, which will be a topic of discussion for generations to come. That’s why they want a deal worth Rs 1000 crore.
Film release and future plans
At this time, Namit Malhotra is in no hurry to sell satellite, music and digital rights. He is of the view that as more content of the film (like additional shots, trailer etc.) is released, its global appeal will increase, which could lead to bigger offers from OTT platforms. Ramayan, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, is being made in two parts. In this, Ranbir Kapoor is playing the role of Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi is playing the role of Sita, Yash is playing the role of Ravana, Sunny Deol is playing the role of Hanuman and Ravi Dubey is playing the role of Laxman.
The first part of the film is planned to be released in October 2026 and the second part in 2027. The grand visuals and grand scale shown in the teaser have already created tremendous excitement towards the film. Given the global appeal of the Ramayana story, the producers want to make the most of it.
This decision of Namit Malhotra shows that he is considering this film not just as a commercial project but as a cinematic heritage. Fans are now waiting to know when the full trailer of the film will be released and how much crores the OTT deal will ultimately cost.
