Has Kanchipuram become the ‘affair capital’ of India?
Changing nature of family and relationships
New Delhi: India is considered the bastion of family values and traditional relationships. Marriage is seen as a sacred union, but the definition of relationships is changing with time. Now married people are turning to discreet dating apps when they feel lack of emotional support.
Kanchipuram: New hub of extramarital affairs
Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, known for its temples and silk sarees, is now at the forefront of extramarital affairs. According to Ashley Madison, a global dating platform, Kanchipuram has gained the top position in the region. Last year it was ranked 17th, but now it has left behind big cities like Delhi and Mumbai.
Number of users of Gleeden app
According to data from another popular app, Gleeden, the number of its users in India has crossed 40 lakh (4 million). Bengaluru tops the list, with 18 percent share of total users. This is followed by Hyderabad (17%), Delhi (11%), Mumbai (9%) and Pune (7%). Work pressure and loneliness are fueling this trend in IT hub cities.
65 percent of the users on this app are men, while 35 percent are women. There has been an increase of 148 percent in the registration of women in the last two years. The age of most of the users is between 25 to 50 years. More than 60 percent of people in Gleeden’s 2024 survey showed interest in non-traditional relationships like swinging and open relationships.
increasing trend of such relationships
Due to busy lifestyle, many people consider emotional loneliness as the main reason for this change. The highest activity on the app is seen during lunch break (12 noon to 3 pm) and after 10 pm. In many cases, spouses are aware of each other’s activities, but they prefer to remain silent. The concept of open marriage is also becoming increasingly popular.
The growth of such activities in a small town like Kanchipuram is surprising to many. This shows that there is a change in thinking towards relationships in big cities as well as tier-2 cities. However, these figures are based only on app usage and do not reflect the overall picture of society. These new trends in relationships in changing India highlight the pursuit of personal happiness and freedom, but also raise questions about traditional values.
