Lebanon’s ‘lifeline’ Israel’s eyes on, threatened to blow up the bridges of Litani River; increased stress
Israel Threatens Lebanon Bridges: Amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the Israeli army has expanded its ground offensive in Lebanon and adopted a strategy of completely cutting off southern Lebanon from the rest of the country. On Friday, an Israeli military spokesman issued a new threat to destroy vital bridges over the Litani River, threatening to bring humanitarian aid and people’s movement to a halt in the region.
strategy to target bridges
Israeli army spokesman Avichai Adrai clarified on social media that the army was planning to bomb the Sohmor and Mashghara bridges over the Litani River in the western Bekaa Valley. At the same time, Israel alleges that these bridges are being used by Hezbollah.
According to experts and local reporters, these bridges are the region’s ‘main arteries’ Without which it would be almost impossible for the people of southern Lebanon to access hospitals and other essential public services. Israel has already destroyed at least six other bridges over the Litani River since the beginning of March.
Attack on infrastructure and civilians
In addition to bridges, Israeli airstrikes have also caused extensive damage to Lebanon’s infrastructure. Friday’s bombings targeted key water centers in Ibl al-Saqi and al-Mayasat, disrupting water supplies in the area. Apart from this, solar power systems at many stations have also been damaged. Lebanon’s civilian water authority condemned the attacks, calling them a flagrant violation of international norms.
humanitarian damage and displacement
According to data from Lebanon’s health ministry, at least 1,345 people have died and more than 4,000 have been injured in the war that began on March 2. The attacks are so widespread that so far more than 12 lakh people have been forced to flee their homes. On Friday itself, two people were killed in an attack on worshipers leaving a mosque in Sahmar town in western Bekaa.
