Strong earthquake tremors shake Delhi-NCR after 5.9 magnitude quake in Afghanistan
Panic swept across parts of North India on Friday night after strong earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR and several neighbouring regions. The shaking, triggered by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan, prompted residents to rush out of homes and office buildings around 9:50 PM IST.
The tremors were reported across a wide stretch of the country, including Noida, Chandigarh, Ludhianaand parts of Jammu and Kashmir such as Srinagar, Poonch, and Udhampur. In many high-rise buildings, residents described the experience as brief but intense, with furniture and household items visibly shaking.
The sudden movement caused alarm, especially in densely populated urban areas, where people gathered in open spaces as a precaution. Several social media users also shared their experiences, describing how ceiling fans swayed and windows rattled during the tremors.
So far, there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualtiesoffering some relief after the initial panic. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and further details about the epicentre and depth of the earthquake are awaited.
The impact of the quake was not limited to India. Tremors were also felt across parts of Pakistan, including Islamabad, Punjab province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Peshawar, indicating the wide reach of the seismic activity.
Earthquakes originating in Afghanistan often affect North India due to the region’s seismic sensitivity and proximity to tectonic plate boundaries. While this quake appears to have caused minimal damage, it serves as a reminder of the region’s vulnerability to sudden seismic events.
