Vietnamese students to learn game development on global platform Roblox

The University of Information Technology under Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City and VNGGames, a subsidiary of VNG Corporation, signed an agreement on Thursday to jointly offer a course titled “Game Development on Roblox.”

The initiative marks the first time Vietnamese students can design and publish games for a global audience as part of their studies. As of the end of 2025, Roblox had more than 144 million daily active users, cementing its position among the world’s top platforms for gaming and digital entertainment.

The course is scheduled to begin in September and will run for three months, enrolling 42 students from the software engineering faculty. The curriculum will be delivered by 14 industry experts and will guide students through the full lifecycle of game development, from concept and design to production and release. By the end of the program, each group is expected to complete a game, with the possibility of publishing it on Roblox.

Associate Professor Nguyen Tan Tran Minh Khang, acting vice rector of the university, said the model enables students to learn through real-world projects while providing a clear pathway to becoming professional game creators. He described it as an effective approach to developing talent for the gaming industry, a key pillar of the digital economy.

Le Quang Tu Do, head of the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, noted that Vietnam had long missed opportunities to grow its gaming industry due to social stigma.

“Many people still think games were harmful, time-wasting, and useless,” he said.

He pointed out that the global gaming industry generates an estimated US$200 billion in revenue, surpassing film, publishing, and digital content creation—and is widely regarded as a “smokeless industry” within the digital economy.

He expressed hope that perceptions will shift, starting with structured training programs like this partnership between academia and industry. If students successfully publish games, they could earn income not only in Vietnam but also globally, an outcome he said would have been unimaginable three decades ago.
