Bhuvneshwar Kumar Becomes First Seamer To 200 IPL Wickets

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who made his IPL debut in 2011, became only the second bowler, and first fast bowler, to claim 200 IPL wickets on Sunday night during the RCB vs CSK IPL 2026 fixture at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

As RCB ascended in the game, after posting 250 after being inserted in by Ruturaj Gaikwad, Bhuvneshwar strengthened his side’s stronghold on the game with the wicket of Ayush Mhatre, who had cracked a fifty in CSK’s previous match against RR.

On his second ball of the match, Bhuvneshwar bowled a hard-length delivery, a recipe that has worked for pacers on this pitch in this game. Under the pressure of a tall chase, Mhatre played an ungainly pull shot, mistiming and mis-hitting it straight to Rajat Patidar at mid-off.

Bhuvneshwar entered the bowling record books as he joined leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal in the 200 IPL wickets club. Bhuvneshwar is the first pacer to the 200-wicket mark in IPL history, with only Chahal sitting ahead of him with 224 wickets.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar IPL journey:

Hailing from Meerut, UP, Bhuvneshwar made his IPL debut in 2011 for Pune Warriors India, a now-defunct franchise, as primarily a new-ball swing bowler.

Ahead of IPL 2014, he was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he bedded in and made a name for himself as a bankable death-overs bowler too. He contributed significantly to SRH’s title-winning campaign in 2016, taking 23 wickets in the season, and followed it up with a 26-wicket IPL 2017 season.

By this time, he had also cemented his place in the Indian team in all three formats. However, after 2019, Bhuvneshwar began to have injury issues, his form and appearances dipping as a consequence.

He was let go by SRH after IPL 2024, and RCB grabbed him in the IPL 2025 mega-auction. Bhuvneshwar repaid RCB’s faith with a 17-wicket season and formed a solid combo with Josh Hazlewood that helped RCB win their maiden IPL title.
