No more tears while cutting onions! Adopt these 5 ‘magical’ home remedies, kitchen work will become easier – ..

Lucknow/New Delhi: Onion is such an ‘all-rounder’ in the kitchen without which most Indian dishes are incomplete. There is no comparison to it in enhancing the taste, but when it comes to cutting it, even the good ones have tears in their eyes. The sulfur-rich gas released from onion causes such irritation in the eyes that people look for excuses to avoid this work. But do you know that by adopting some easy kitchen hacks, you can chop a lot of onions in minutes without crying? Let us know those effective methods which will change your cooking experience.

1. A sharp knife is your best friend

Often people do not pay attention to this, but the edge of the knife matters a lot while cutting onions.

Reason: A dull knife cuts the onion cells by pressing them, due to which a large amount of gas comes out and increases the burning sensation in the eyes.

remedy: Always use a sharp knife. It cuts onions cleanly and reduces gas leakage.

2. ‘Cool’ formula of cold water

This is considered to be the oldest and most effective method. Before cutting the onion, peel it and soak it in cold water for 5-10 minutes.

Benefit: Cold water prevents the sulfur present in onion from activating. This not only reduces the irritation in the eyes, but also makes it very easy to remove the onion peel.

3. ‘Desi Jugaad’ of candle

It may sound a bit strange, but this is a tried and tested recipe in many homes. While chopping onions, keep a burning candle near your chopping board.

How it works: The flame of the candle attracts the onion gas spreading in the air and burns it. Due to this, the gas does not reach your eyes and you can complete your work without shedding tears.

4. Start the right way

Even a slight change in the way of cutting onion can provide great relief.

Trick: First of all, cut the onion into two parts from the middle and then peel it. After this, cut its upper part (root) last, because most of the gas accumulates in the root part of the onion.

5. Take care of fans or ventilation

While cutting onions, if the air flow is in the opposite direction of your eyes, the gas will not reach you.

Tip: Try to cut onions while sitting near a window or in a place where there is good cross-ventilation. You can also use a small table fan to blow the gas away from you.

Pro Tip: If you’re in a hurry, just pop the onions in the freezer for 5 minutes before slicing them. Due to this, the gas molecules freeze and are less likely to hit the eyes when cut.
