New Delhi: Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has questioned the exclusion of Shubman Gill from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad, calling it a “tough call” while highlighting the challenges of maintaining consistency across formats.
Gill, who currently leads India in Tests and ODIs, was left out of the T20 squad despite being part of the format for much of the year. The selectors instead opted for a different combination at the top of the order.
“Tough to perform in all formats”
Yuvraj pointed out that it is extremely difficult for any batter to excel consistently across all three formats of the game, especially while handling leadership responsibilities.
He cited Virat Kohli as a rare example of a player who managed to deliver across formats while also captaining the side successfully. He also acknowledged Rohit Sharma for his contributions during the same era.
According to Yuvraj, dropping a player who has been part of the T20 setup throughout the year based on form alone is a difficult decision.
Selectors prefer different combination
The team management opted for a more flexible top-order, selecting wicketkeeper-batters like Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson, along with Abhishek Sharma.
This combination offers additional options behind the stumps while maintaining aggressive batting at the top—an important factor in modern T20 cricket.
Gill’s relatively modest returns in white-ball formats compared to his red-ball success are believed to have influenced the decision.

Yuvraj also spoke about the future of senior players, urging greater clarity regarding the roles of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as India builds towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.
While both stalwarts have stepped away from Tests and T20Is, they remain key figures in the 50-over format. However, their long-term involvement remains uncertain.
