CBI probe ordered into Arunachal CM’s family over distribution of ₹1,270 crore contracts
The Supreme Court has ordered a preliminary investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into alleged irregularities in government contracts in Arunachal Pradesh. This investigation will be done regarding contracts related to the family of Chief Minister Pema Khandu.
In the Supreme Court, the bench of Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Sandeep Mehta and Justice NV Anjaria has asked the CBI to investigate the public construction contracts awarded between November 2015 and 2025. The court clarified that if needed, the agency can also investigate transactions outside this period.
This order has come after hearing a PIL filed by Save Mon Region Federation. The petition alleged that government contracts worth about ₹1,270 crore were awarded to institutions linked to the Chief Minister’s family, bypassing the rules.
Those companies which are allegedly linked to the Chief Minister’s wife, mother and nephew will also be included in the scope of investigation. The petition specifically mentions M/s Brand Eagles, which is said to be linked to the Chief Minister’s wife. Apart from this, M/s Alliance Trading Company, the company of Chief Minister’s nephew and Tawang MLA Tsering Tashi, has also been mentioned.
Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the petitioners, argued in the court that the contracts were awarded at high rates, causing loss to the government exchequer.
The Supreme Court said in its order that at present this direction is only to assess whether there is a need for a detailed investigation in the case. The court also clarified that this order is not a final comment on the veracity of the allegations.
The CBI has been asked to file a status report within 16 weeks, stating whether the case requires a full investigation. This matter is now being considered important at both political and legal levels, because it has raised big questions regarding transparency and accountability in government contracts.
