Jitendra’s career got new life with this film, his image changed!
The actor did more than 200 films in his career but the success he got from the film ‘Parichaya’ in 1972 was not achieved by any other film. This film gave life to the dead career of the actor. The actor is celebrating his birthday on 7th April.
The film ‘Parichay’ directed by Gulzar, released in 1972, proved to be a lifesaver for superstar Jitendra. When Jitendra left behind his ‘jumping jack’ image and dancing shoes and donned glasses and a serious look on his face, the audience found an actor the likes of which had never been seen before. Dancing to the tunes of ‘Musafir Hoon Yaaron’ and playing the character of the simple-minded ‘Ravi’, Jitendra proved that he is not just a star but also a seasoned artiste.
‘Parichay’ was also not easy for actor Jitendra because there was a perception in the industry that he could only dance and jump well and serious acting was not his cup of tea. When Gulzar Sahab had signed Jitendra for the film ‘Parichaya’, many people had told him, “Jitendra is like a log,” i.e. straight and emotionless. The actor himself wondered how he would prepare himself for the film but he practiced speaking with his eyes and face in a closed room.
It is said that at that time Gulzar had asked the actor to practice talking without dialogues and only with his eyes and face, so that he could convey the expressions on his face. This method worked and his white kurta and thin mustache character Ravi in the film made the fans crazy. The film emerged as a classic family drama and was included among the top grossing films of the year.
Even before 1972, Jeetendra’s films were liked but in those films, Jeetendra’s character was that of a playful boy, who dances with energy wearing his white iconic shoes. In his first film ‘Geet Gaya Patharon Ne’, ‘Farz’, and ‘Hamjoli’, his character was almost the same but ‘Parichay’ gave a new introduction to his life.
