Middle East Crisis: Amidst the increasing geopolitical tension and conflict in West Asia (Middle East), the Indian government has strengthened its preparations. In a high-level inter-ministerial press conference held in New Delhi on Monday, April 6, 2026, the government clarified that food security, fuel supply and maritime trade are completely safe in the country. Also, the safety of Indian citizens stranded in war-torn areas remains the top priority of the government.

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Food has assured that there is adequate buffer stock of rice and wheat available in the country, which is capable of dealing with any emergency. Wheat procurement for Rabi marketing season 2026-27 has started smoothly.

What did the ministry say in the press conference?

According to the information given by the ministry, despite global uncertainties (Middle East Crisis), domestic availability of edible oils and sugar is satisfactory. To keep a check on prices, the department is daily monitoring 40 essential commodities from 578 centers and no unusual fluctuations have been observed in the market so far.

Government’s eye on stopping hoarding

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said that despite the tension in the Strait of Hormuz (Middle East Crisis), domestic LPG distribution is normal. More than 18 crore cylinders have been distributed since March 1, 2026. To prevent hoarding, the government has increased the booking interval to 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural areas. Apart from this, more than 52,000 illegal cylinders have been seized in more than 1 lakh raids across the country. Transparency is being ensured across the industry through 97 percent online booking and 90 percent DAC-based delivery.

On the maritime trade front, there is relief news that two Indian flagged LPG vessels, ‘Green Saanvi’ and ‘Green Hope’, have safely transited the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Currently, there are 433 sailors on board 16 Indian ships in the Persian Gulf, whose safety is being monitored by the 24’7 control room of the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping).
