New Delhi. Madurai Court of Tamil Nadu has sentenced nine policemen to death in the case of death of father and son during their custody in the police station. The court considered this incident to be the rarest of rare case i.e. a very heinous crime and convicted the policemen under murder and other related sections. The court has also ordered all the culprits to pay Rs 1 crore 40 lakh as compensation to the families of the deceased. This case is from Sathankulam area of Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu. In the year 2020, the police had detained businessman P Jayaraj and his son J Bennix, who later died in custody.

The police had detained the father and son for violating the rules of lockdown during Covid-19. According to the police, the father and son had kept their mobile accessories shop open even after the scheduled time. The case of death of father and son in police custody had gained a lot of attention and questions were being raised on the working style of the police, there was anger among the people across the country and there was a demand for a judicial inquiry into the case. Taking the matter seriously, the investigation of the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

CBI investigation found that the father and son were tortured throughout the night in the police station due to which they suffered serious injuries and both of them died due to internal bleeding. CBI had made 10 policemen accused in this case, out of which one has died during Covid. The policemen who have been sentenced to death include Inspector S. Sridhar, Sub-Inspector P. Raghu Ganesh, K. Balakrishnan, Head Constable S. Murugan, A. Samadurai, Constable M.Muthuraaj, S. Chelladurai, X. Thomas Francis and S. Velumuthu’s name is included.
