Impeachment motion against Chief Election Commissioner rejected: Know how many MPs had signed for his removal from the post
New Delhi : Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan has rejected the opposition’s motion for impeachment against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Rajya Sabha Secretariat issued a bulletin late on Monday evening saying that after considering this proposal, the Chairman, exercising the powers given to him under Section 3 of the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, has refused to accept the notice of the said proposal.
This proposal was given by Trinamool Congress on March 12 and it was signed by 63 members of the opposition. It has been said in the Bulletin of the Rajya Sabha that after duly considering the notice of the motion and carefully and impartially evaluating all the related aspects and issues, the Chairman, in exercise of the powers conferred on him under Section 3 of the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, has refused to accept the notice of the said motion.
In this proposal, the Chief Election Commissioner has been accused of discriminatory conduct. It has also been claimed that the Chief Election Commissioner, acting in a biased manner, has disenfranchised a large number of voters during the special intensive revision of voter lists. A motion for impeachment was also made against him in the Lok Sabha, which was signed by 130 members of the opposition. The Opposition has been campaigning against Mr Kumar for long on the issue of intensive revision of voter lists. Earlier, the opposition had also brought a motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to remove him from his post, which was defeated in the House.
