New Delhi : Due to the influence of two active westerly winds from northwest Change in climate has been On Monday, Western Himalayan region and eastern parts of the country received light to moderate rain and heavy snowfall. Hail and gusty winds also lashed parts of Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh along with Jammu and Kashmir. The weather is likely to remain the same in the northern hilly areas and adjoining plains till April 10, during which hail and thundershowers have been warned for some areas.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), an active westerly wind along with a low pressure area is currently operating in the upper atmosphere around Pakistan and Punjab. Additionally, cyclonic winds are blowing over many parts of the country, increasing atmospheric instability. Chances of thunderstorms and lightning have been observed to increase. At the same time, cold winds of around 80 knots over central and eastern India are strengthening these systems further, leading to an increase in the occurrence of gusty winds, thunderstorms and lightning.

Meanwhile, under the influence of these weather systems, during the last 24 hours, heavy snowfall occurred in the higher parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and rains in valleys and plains. Winds of 30-70 kmph and rain were recorded over the Ganges plains.
Hailstorm in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir
The higher parts of Jammu and Kashmir received rain accompanied by snowfall and some parts including Shopian and Kulgam recorded hailstorm. Aharbal area of Shopian was the worst hit due to hailstorm. It was cloudy in the Union Territory since morning. There was no sunlight in many plains including Srinagar. This made the weather pleasant and cool winds blew.
Landslide alert in Jammu and Kashmir
According to the forecast of the Meteorological Department, the weather will continue to change till April 16. Rain in the plains and snowfall in the higher hilly areas, as well as thunderstorms, avalanches and landslides are likely in sensitive areas on Tuesday and Wednesday.
