Security Breach at Delhi Assembly After Man Drives SUV Through VIP Gate and Leaves Bouquet Near Speaker’s Office
A security scare unfolded at the Delhi Legislative Assembly complex on Monday afternoon after a man driving a white SUV with a Uttar Pradesh registration number forced his way through a restricted VIP entrance and entered the premises without authorization. The incident, which occurred around 2:05 pm, has triggered a high-level investigation into how multiple security layers were bypassed at one of the capital’s most sensitive government locations.
According to initial reports, Central Reserve Police Force personnel were stationed at Gate No. 2, which is designated exclusively for VIP movement. Despite the presence of security personnel, the vehicle managed to breach the gate and proceed inside the complex. The individual was later identified as Sarabjit Singh. After entering the premises, he drove toward the main building area before stepping out of the vehicle carrying a bouquet and a garland.
He first approached the official vehicle of Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Guptawhich had been left unlocked as the driver was temporarily away inside the Speaker’s office. The man placed the bouquet and garland inside the vehicle and briefly sat inside before stepping out. Forensic teams later examined the vehicle as part of the investigation.
The individual then walked toward the Speaker’s office and left another bouquet and garland outside the chamber. The entire sequence of events, from entry into the complex to departure through the same VIP gate, reportedly took only five to six minutes. At the time of the incident, the Speaker was present inside his office within the Assembly complex.
Soon after the breach was detected, senior Delhi Police officials, including the Police Commissioner and Special Commissioner, arrived at the site to assess the situation. A bomb disposal squad was deployed as a precautionary measure, but no explosives or suspicious materials were found in the items left behind.
Authorities later detained the suspect at a police checkpoint near A Nala in the Roopnagar area and recovered the vehicle used in the incident. Preliminary inputs suggest the accused had previously expressed support online for farmer protest leaders who died during earlier demonstrations, though investigators are still examining his motive. A senior officer of Additional Director General rank will supervise the inquiry as officials review possible security lapses at the Assembly’s VIP access points.
