Truth of Shashi Tharoor’s statement on US-Iran ceasefire and Pakistan’s mediation, Congress MP expressed displeasure
News India Live, Digital Desk: A new controversy has arisen in Indian politics regarding the recent ceasefire between America and Iran. A video of Congress MP Shashi Tharoor is becoming increasingly viral on social media, in which he is seen praising the mediation done by Pakistan and criticizing the Indian government. However, Shashi Tharoor himself has come forward and termed this video as completely ‘fake’ and ‘deepfake’. He clarified that he never said such words in praise of Pakistan. Truth behind deepfake video: What’s in the viral clip? The AI-generated video going viral shows Shashi Tharoor saying that Pakistan is becoming the center of global peace, while India is busy with films like ‘Dhurandhar 2’. After this video surfaced, Tharoor expressed his displeasure by posting on ‘X’ (Twitter). He wrote, “Many deepfake videos of mine are being circulated, in which AI-generated voices are being used to make me say things on old clips that I never said. It is extremely disappointing that people are believing these lies.” Shashi Tharoor’s real stand: ‘I cannot be happy’ In fact, Shashi Tharoor had questioned the ‘silence’ of the Indian government in statements given on March 26 and April 9, but he did not praise Pakistan. He had said: “It is a bit shameful for us that India, which has good relations with both the countries (US and Iran), has not been at the forefront of mediation.” “When countries like Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt are leading the peace efforts, I can’t be happy about that.” He had expressed hope that India, in line with its ‘world leader’ image, will play a bigger role in resolving the crisis. Indian government’s stand: Ceasefire Welcome, but… The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India, has formally welcomed the 2-week ceasefire between the US and Iran on 8 April. However, India avoided taking the name of Pakistan in its statement. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India has always been in favor of peace, dialogue and diplomacy and hoped that this would ease the movement of merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The priority for India is to ensure the security and energy supply of its 1 crore migrants. Pakistan’s role and Trump’s movePakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has announced that Islamabad will host official peace talks between the US and Iran from April 10. US President Donald Trump has also given credit to Pakistan for this success. Experts believe that India’s policy has always been bilateral and it has avoided getting involved in third-party mediation, which is why India maintained a safe distance in this entire process.
